This artifiact bundle is a compliation displaying poltical interference in federal regulation commissions. On February 17, 2022 the FERC released two new policy statements. The first, Consideration of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Natural Gas Infrastructure Project Reviews, was in regards to GHG emissions from newly constructed LNG transport and terminal facilities. The new GHG emissions statement expanded the FERCs scope when quantifying GHG emissions to include "legally relevant downstream and upstream" emissions. The second policy statement,
Updated Policy Statement on Certification of New Interstate Natural Gas Facilities, improved upon the FERCs dertermination and assesment of public benefits for a new project weighed against the consequences, such as environmental concerns and sourrounding communities (EJ and Landowners). The two new policies immediatley received opposition from many high ranking political officials as some characterized the policies as porrly timed when the need for energy resources should be expedited, confusing, and ineffective red tapping by the commission. Many environmentalist stated that the criticisms were overblown and that the new policies were beneficial in supporting environmental justice communities and integrating climate change discource into its revewal process of new LNG facilities. The two policies, following the blowback from majority republicans, were reverted from policies to draft policies. Richard Glick, Chairman of the FERC provided this statement, "“However, in light of concerns that the policy statements created further confusion about the Commission’s approach to the siting of natural gas projects, the Commission decided it would be helpful to gather additional comments from all interested stakeholders, including suggestions for creating greater certainty, before implementing the new policy statements.” The bundle provides a clear example of political interference and pressure exerted on federal agencies; putting poltics over people.
