I am a (science) education researcher and look at most things in the world through the lens of education. On disaster (or anything else), the questions I ask are - e.g., why should we teach about it? What should we teach about it, and how? How can we support teachers to teach about disasters in their classrooms? My training in educational research has equipped me with the theories, tools and methods that can be utilised to approach these questions. I am hoping that these knowledge, experiences and skills can cross-fertilise with EcoGovLab's expertise in anthropology, SPS and environmental governance.

Our Purpose

One of our greatest responsibilities is to prepare the next generation to meet the challenges they will face in the 21st Century, with a deep commitment to the rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship. We have a unique opportunity for a community dialogue about the civic values, knowledge, and skills that K-12 students should learn and practice in our public school system. We will create strong community support for our schools to provide effective civic education for students to be successful in college, career and citizenship.

Summer Institute – Civic Ed Center

The Mission of CV YEA is "Our mission is to fight environmental injustices in the Central Valley through connecting like-minded individuals". 

CV YEA is based in Fresno, CA and led by Executive Director Kamryn Kubose (interview), who we met during our visit to Golden Charter Academy. CV YEA takes part in Clean Vehicle Empowerment Collaborative. The board consists of master's students and environmental activists based in California.

The two authors reference it in their book, Biosecurity Interventions: Global Health and Security in Question. Otherwise I couldn't find anything.

I uploaded this artifact because I believe that reparing Newark’s infrastructure is very important, especially since a lot of it’s economy relies on it. Without the repairs, it would lead to bigger problems such as increasing the cost of maintenance for its residents and the companies that use it daily. This decision made me realize that although Newark is struggling in bringing its economy back, its politicians know that maintaining it’s road is the foundation towards recovering from the recession.

-The “disaster investigation,” far from proving itself the dispassionate, scientific verdict on causality and blame, actually emerges as a hard-fought contest to define the moment in politics and society, in technology and culture.

-Investigators had no power to protest the decision. In fact, their initial request to inspect the steel had been lost in the confusion by city officials still pressed with the responsibility of looking for bodies.

-Clashes over authority among powerful institutions both public and private, competition among rival experts for influence, inquiry into a disaster elevated to the status of a memorial for the dead: these are the base elements of the World Trade Center investigation. And yet, give a brief historical review shows us these elements are not unique.

I cannot find a precise statement, but it appears that they are grant/unviersity funded research.

Vincanne Adams, PhD of Anthropology and fromer directer and vice chair of Medical Anthropology. She is within the department of Anthro, Hsitory, and Social Medicine. This is incrediable relevant to disasters and disaster response. She includes in her interested Global Health and Disaster Recovery as well.

Taslim van hattum, Director of Behavioral Health Integration at Louisiana Public Health Institute, with a background in Maternal and Child Health. Relative to this article and to disasters in general mental health is incrediable important, and children are much more at risk during a disaster than adults are.

Diana English, for some reason I couldn't find anything on her.

The bibliography is organized into subcategories, such as 'Health Services' and 'Social Environment and Behavior', suggesting a heavily multi-disciplinary approach. It is also quite long for a 12 page article, due to the summary style that the article intended, suggesting a thorough knowledge of the subject.
