Joshua Moses
JoshuaI teach anthropology and environmental studies at Haveford College, just outside of Philly. Currently, I'm holed up in a cabin in the Adirondacks in upstate New York with several family members, including my spouse and 4 year old daughter and 3 dogs. I started working on disasters by accident, when one day in 2001 I was walking to class at NYU and saw the World Trade Center buildings on flames. I have known Kim for a few year and I contacted her to connect with folks around Covid-19 and its imacts.
I'm particularly intersted in issues of communal grief, mourning, and bereavement. Also, I'm interested in the religious response to Covid-19.

The findings presented in this report are important when considering the long term effects of a disaster and the clean-up aspects of responding to a disaster that may continue for months or even years following the initial event. The Committee’s plan for the 2014-2019 period includes consideration of a network of experts to share information amongst the scientific community as a method of increasing awareness of and preparation for potential nuclear industry disasters.

erin_tuttleThe most persuasive part of the film was when the palliative care doctor discussed the importance of understanding a patients goals. Everyone has different priorities and will make decisions on their treatment based on those priorities. The ideas presented in the film that deal with the point where treatment is no longer the best course of action are more widely accepted now but still challenge doctors whose entire professions focus on saving lives.

erin_tuttleThe article implies that no one is using many of the apps described, as they are not practical in reporting sexual assault and they are not being built with real consideration as to their use. While the article does suggest that some apps are promising, such as one that sends an SOS to a preset list of contacts, there is still very little evidence that this would be used rather than simply texting or calling one of those numbers.

erin_tuttleEmergency response is viewed in the film from the perspective of a potential patient rather than the organizations or medical professionals. From this perspective it is easy to see how the public can lose faith in the ability of their hospitals and doctors to protect them. The public did not have the information to understand that the emergency response groups were working as hard as possible, instead many people were angry at the time it would take for an ambulance to arrive, or the fact that the hospitals had to turn away patients. This emphasizes the importance of communication as the emergency responders would have had more success if the public had been cooperative, but the public could not be cooperative while their feared for their lives and the lives of their families.

erin_tuttleEmergency response is addressed in terms of aid workers involved in a long term aid project for war torn or poverty stricken communities. The article focused on the risks that these health workers take due to the greater likelihood of violence against health workers in these environments when compared to the average city hospital.
