I hope to be involved in projects that aim to gather scientific evidence to inform environmental decision making and advocate for greater equity and justice in environmental governance. Through this work, I hope to learn the skills needed to engage in community based research and leverage community knowledge as expert knowledge. In my department, things are often siloed and issues are only seen through one perspective. I really want to gain more experience in collaborating with a wide array of stakeholders to come up with approaches to mitigate the environmental injustices experienced in under-resourced communities.
This article shows that the NJ Turnpike Authority responded to this infrastructural hazard when the Newark Bay Extension Bridge (between Newark and Bayonne which links all points west of Jersey City and Bayonne to the Holland Tunnel), showed serious structural deficiencies.
The incredible amount of awful potholes in Newark called for this report. This report lists all of the streets and the dates that they will be paved in Newark, and it is one fat list. Newark roads are awful. Bad roads=poor infrastructure= weak resilience. If there is a disaster, someone who lives in a poor area may hit a pothole and be completely stranded and die, as a result of the poor infrastructure of our roads in Newark. I once hit a pothole in Newark and the bang from my wheel hitting the edge of the hole was loud and drastic enough for me to worry about a flat tire. I didn't get a flat, fortunately, but my tire frame was bent.
This artifact represents a form of a precaution against the hazard of flooding and other natural disasters. This is a map showing the evcacuation routes for residents of Essex County.

"At the forefront of this work is NJIT’s Center for Resilient Design, housed at the university’s College of Architecture and Design. Established immediately post-Sandy, the Center conducts research and serves as a clearinghouse for expertise, ready-to-build designs, case studies and best practices. The Center is accessed by state and local leaders, business owners and residents living in areas especially vulnerable to flooding and storms."
Flooding is a major vulnerability of the Greater Newark area. There are large portions of the area that are extremely vulnerable to flooding, and have suffered substantial damage in the past, and to this day. Notably, the Ironbound and Airport/Port areas of Newark sustained a lot of flooding during the recent hurricanes and major storms.
