I hope to be involved in projects that aim to gather scientific evidence to inform environmental decision making and advocate for greater equity and justice in environmental governance. Through this work, I hope to learn the skills needed to engage in community based research and leverage community knowledge as expert knowledge. In my department, things are often siloed and issues are only seen through one perspective. I really want to gain more experience in collaborating with a wide array of stakeholders to come up with approaches to mitigate the environmental injustices experienced in under-resourced communities.
This article from 2009 focuses on the controversy of a garbage incenerator in the Ironbound that has sparked civil engagements to make the facility practice clean emmisions. Despite their reports of emmision reductions in 2005, the community argued that the garbage incenereator looked over many occassions where they violated those regulations, and how it still effects those communities. Here we see how the governments and people's interest don't line up.
This initiative by the ICC to ground the history of Environmental Justice in Newark, while creating resilience through education and powerful messages.
This artifact shows that a variety of agencies/companies banded together to provide relief following Hurricane Sandy. The NJPAC is a NGO.
This article did not talk about how much newark is polluted, in comparison to social implications. Granted this article was about a passed government action, there was information I probably wasn't shown that was taken into consideration.
This report is about an initiative taken by the government to rectify a century's worth of pollution dumped into the Passaic River and the means used to do it.
This article shows that the NJ Turnpike Authority responded to this infrastructural hazard when the Newark Bay Extension Bridge (between Newark and Bayonne which links all points west of Jersey City and Bayonne to the Holland Tunnel), showed serious structural deficiencies.
