The main argument is that susceptibility to certain diseases is not only determined by biology but also social conditions, leading to a disproportionate disease rate among the poor, and minority groups without access to medical services. The author shows that addressing these social conditions leads to a decrease in disease when combining treatment and prevention plans.

The most persuasive part of the film was when the palliative care doctor discussed the importance of understanding a patients goals. Everyone has different priorities and will make decisions on their treatment based on those priorities. The ideas presented in the film that deal with the point where treatment is no longer the best course of action are more widely accepted now but still challenge doctors whose entire professions focus on saving lives.

The data for this study were collected as part of a larger, population-based, representative study of persons living in the 23 southernmost counties of Mississippi prior to Hurricane Katrina. This is not a new or inventive way of studying this issue, as a representitive study of a population is one of the classic ways social research is conducted.

Lakoff works at the University of Southern California and Collier is the Director of Anthropology for the New School.

The article implies that no one is using many of the apps described, as they are not practical in reporting sexual assault and they are not being built with real consideration as to their use. While the article does suggest that some apps are promising, such as one that sends an SOS to a preset list of contacts, there is still very little evidence that this would be used rather than simply texting or calling one of those numbers.

One of the things that I was going to follow up on was the Campaign to Shut Down Rikers, but unfortunately the website has been shut down, and currently holds no content. There is currently no explanation as to why the website was taken down; at least that I could find.

Emergency response is addressed in terms of aid workers involved in a long term aid project for war torn or poverty stricken communities. The article focused on the risks that these health workers take due to the greater likelihood of violence against health workers in these environments when compared to the average city hospital.
