AK COVID-Development Studies Intersections

I am currently in the process of transitioning my M.A. level course on Science, Technology, and Development with 11 students to virtual instruction. One of my interests in engaging with COVID-19 is to examine how it (should) informs development ideologies and practices. How should students of development studies retool -- conceptually, methodologically, practically -- in wake of the pandemic?

The authors present the modernization and globalization of nations and the emerging global threat of infectious diseases as the primary catalysts for the intersection of various organizations concerned with biosecurity and public health. Numerous national and multi-national organizations have reacted to this emerging threat by developing new strategic frameworks to promote prevention and preparedness. The increase in tension among various organizations on developing effective strategies is indicative of the overlapping fields of national security, biosecurity, public safety, and global health.

The mission is to improve the safety and health of workers in all industries.

''Nature is eventually going to take its course,'' said David Turner of the United States Forest Service. ''It is a cataclysmic event for humans. But this is a dry habitat. Fire has been sweeping through this land for centuries.'' The flames are part of a cleansing process with real benefits, a lesson the Indians learned long ago to their hunting advantage but forest officials came late to. Now, in part due to budget restrictions, they do not rush in to fight every blaze everywhere. Some isolated fires are left to burn themselves out, naturally.
