Biography

Benjamin Hegarty is an interdisciplinary gender and sexuality studies scholar and McKenzie Fellow at the University of Melbourne. He is the author of The Made-Up State: Governing Gender Conformity in the Indonesian City, under contract with Cornell University Press. His publications appear in the Journal of Asian Studies, Ethos, Transgender Studies Quarterly, and Medicine Anthropology Theory. Together with transgender activist Rully Mallay, epidemiologist Ignatius Praptoraharjo, and Sandeep Nanwani, he wrote and translated a forthcoming essay in Transgender Studies Quarterly on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on one transgender community in Indonesia.
